I can't believe it's been 7 years since taxidermist and landowner Randy Bowe of Duluth became fed up with hikers trashing his property and harassing him while he was hunting, causing him to cancel the easement he granted to the Superior Hiking Trail through his property. This easement allowed SHT hikers exiting Gooseberry Falls State Park to continue their northbound hike. It was a beautiful section of trail. After the closure hikers were forced to walk the paved bike trail along Highway 61. After a lot of planning, fund raising and hard work, it appears the SHTA has closed the Gooseberry Gap! Watch this excellent video from SHTA volunteer Marty Anderson to learn more. One of the fascinating details is the work done by Dirt Candy Designs. In the photo below grabbed from the video, the existing trail is red. The temporary detour is pink. The new trail is yellow. The lost easement followed the high ridgeline out of Gooseberry Falls State Park. Congratulations to the SHTA and all the volunteers who made this happen. I hope to get out and hike this section soon.
